GET FiT Mozambique at RENMOZ 2025

Contributing to Mozambique’s Energy Transition

The GET FiT Mozambique programme was proud to participate in the RENMOZ 2025, the fourth in the series of this premier renewable energy and energy transition conference in Mozambique. RENMOZ serves as a critical platform for energy stakeholders from around the world to engage with the latest innovations, opportunities, and challenges in the energy sector in Mozambique. The event provides an opportunity to explore solutions to meet the country’s energy needs and to drive sustainable growth in the energy sector, with a special focus on renewable energy and mini-grid solutions and identifying actionable approaches that lead to concrete results.

GET FIT Programme representation

The GET FiT Mozambique Programme Implementation Team was well represented at RENMOZ 2025. First and foremost, GET FiT is financed by the German Government through KFW but is the Government’s own programme, with MIREME as Project Executing Agency, ARENE as the competent agency for implementation of the tenders, EDM as the offtaker of the energy from the IPPs to be established, and FUNAE as the government body with responsibility for off-grid electrification. All these constitute the GET FIT Programme Implementation Team and were well represented in the conference. Multiconsult Norge AS as the Programme Implementation Consultant, represented by Project Director Mari Sofie Furu, Programme Manager for GET FiT Mozambique Benon Mutambi, and Programme Manager for GET FiT Mini-grids Emmett Costel, engaged actively with other key stakeholders in the Mozambican energy sector throughout the conference. Mr. Sergio Moreno of ARENE highlighted the opportunities of the GET FiT Solar PV + BESS tender, with six projects across the country to be connected to the EDM grid as Independent Power Producer projects, highlighting that the results of the prequalification process would be announced soon. Mari Sofie Furu in dialogue with participants underscored the programme’s commitment to increasing energy access through renewable sources and focused on focused on the importance of private sector engagement and investment in the energy transition.

GET FiT Mozambique on the Mini-grid Panel

A particular highlight for the programme was Emmett Costel’s participation in the panel on mini-grids, which attracted significant attention. The panel discussion revolved around new strategies to attract mini-grid operators in Mozambique. This is a crucial topic as mini-grids are seen as an essential solution to bring electricity to off-grid communities, especially in rural areas where grid extension is not feasible. Emmett shared insights on the challenges and opportunities for mini-grid development in Mozambique, addressing issues such as financing, regulatory frameworks, and the role of the private sector in driving innovation and deployment of mini-grid solutions.

The panel also explored innovative approaches to attracting operators and ensuring the sustainability of mini-grid projects. With GET FiT Mozambique playing a central role in the development of mini-grid projects across the country, Emmett’s contributions were invaluable in shaping the conversation around the future of mini-grids in Mozambique.

The GET FiT Mini-grids Tender and Prequalification Process

The energy regulatory agency, ARENE, is overseeing the prequalification process for potential mini-grid operators which opened on 14th April 2025. The prequalification is the first part of the process to facilitate the development of four clusters of mini-grids across the province of Nampula, aiming to provide electricity to approximately 7,000 households.

The prequalification process, detailed on ARENE’s news page, is designed to identify capable and qualified operators who can meet the technical, financial, and regulatory requirements necessary to successfully implement and operate mini-grid projects. The GET FiT Mozambique team works with ARENE and other stakeholders to ensure that experienced and committed developers are selected to deliver these vital projects.

Looking Forward

As we look to the future, successfully attracting private investors and operators for renewable energy development, both on-grid and mini-grid projects remains a top priority for GET FiT Mozambique, as they are critical to advancing the country’s energy access agenda. The discussions at RENMOZ 2025 reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between government, the private sector, and international partners in achieving the energy access goals set out by the Mozambican government to enable the success of such initiatives.

GET FiT wishes to thank the organizers of the conference ALER and AMER, the Mozambican government, and all participants, for all the good efforts in various initiatives. Together, we will achieve the overall objective of GET FiT: a climate-friendly development path and sustainable growth in Mozambique.
